The Best Leonard Nimoy / Zachary Quinto Video You'll Ever See: An Audi Commercial
Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of science officer Spock in Star Trek back in 1966, hasn’t become as popular to modern audiences as co-stars William Shatner, the self-parodying Internet sensation, or George Takei, the FacebookFB-2.47%tastemaker. But if he continues to make video shorts for Audi ‘s YouTube page like the one below (along with the current Spock, actor Zachary Quinto), he will be well on his way to wresting the title of Internet champ away from them both.
In this two-and-a-half minute long commercial, we see Nimoy as both the tastemaker (promoting Audi by not actually promoting it) and the self-parodying actor: In his not-Audi, Nimoy sings to himself. I’ll put a link, below, for those who don’t recognize the cringeworthy delightful, wonderfully bad, song he’s singing.
This video comes in advance of the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, which will be released by Paramount on May 17, 2013.
According to Audi, the German company recently reported that April 2013’s sales were an increase of 14.2% over April 2012.
“Audi year-to-date sales through the end of April 2013 were 15.5% above the pace set a year earlier when Audi finished with record annual results in the U.S. Sales in April 2013 were only exceeded by the sales of 14,841 vehicles in December 2012 and 13,253 vehicles in March 2013.”
The car at the end of the commercial was the Audi Autonomous TT. According to Forbes staff writer,Hannah Elliot, Audi is “first automaker allowed to operate self-driving vehicles on public roads” in the state of Nevada. According to an Audi representative, “The Autonomous TT vehicle seen at the end of the video is a concept car and is not currently available for purchase. However, pricing for the 2013 Audi S7″–the car Quinto was driving–”begins at $78,800.”
Now, the two videos: First, the Audi sketch, and below that, the Nimoy song.
